Effective Policing Through Cultural Proficiency
KPA works with Police Departments to increase their understanding of diversity and inclusion. We utilize Cultural Proficiency in our work with Police; our programs are well received by participants and our results impressive.
We have recently completed a training assignment for the City of Topeka, Kansas Police Department. Topeka, the capitol city of Kansas, is a mid-sized city with a population of 117,000. The Police Department has 294 sworn officers and an additional 50 civilian employees. KPA trained all departmental employees including management staff.
Cultural Proficiency has provided law enforcement personnel the opportunity to recognize the importance of culture in their values and in others. We look at individual culture first, and then begin to look outwardly, first at how culture impacts law enforcement and then how it impacts their interaction with the community.
The values of the department, derived from the values of members’ families of origin are then developed. Honesty, integrity, trust, hard work and commitment are the most stated values. The compiled values represent a department that makes a genuine difference in the community.
Cultural Proficiency provides a powerful approach for law enforcement organizations to work more effectively with citizens in their communities.
